Ultrasound tech thrust transducer into my belly almost into fetus head?

I took my wife to have an ultrasound the tech repeatedly jabbed the transducer, about 11 times into my wife's belly while I was watching on the screen the transducer almost touched the baby's arm that was in front of his face. This was all to get the baby to move his arm to get a picture of the baby's face, Is this normal
