Is it good etiquette to use the tablecloth as a bib?

I'm going to be dining at a posh French restaurant tomorrow. I recently saw an episode of Mr Bean where Mr Bean is dining at a posh restaurant, and after sitting down he pulls up the tablecloth and tucks it into the top of his shirt acting as a bib. I assume this is the correct etiquette when fine dining (I can't see any other use for a tablecloth), but I would just like some confirmation on this.
